4 New Mud Runs Enter the Playing Field in 2013

2012 saw explosive growth in the mud running industry, and in 2013 even more companies are wanting in on all the muddy action.  At least four new mud runs will offer obstacle course racers even more options to choose from in 2013.  Will they join the likes of the Warrior Dash or will they be yesterday’s news like Frawg Stomp’s Primal Run and Metro Dash? (Frawg Stomp filed for bankruptcy last year without even being able to offer a refund to registered participants.)  Despite the explosive growth that the sport has seen, the obstacle course industry is indeed a competitive one to enter these days.  But the question remains: Is it saturated or will these new kids on the block find their place?

Biggest Loser Off-Road Challenge:

NBC’s Biggest Loser will host over 14 events across the country as part of the show’s mission to help people lead healthier lives.  These events are non-competitive, have mellow obstacles and plenty will walk the whole race.  This is a cool addition to the obstacle course options because while women already had events like Dirty Girl to help them build confidence in the sport, men didn’t really have a similar option.

Iron Warrior Dash:

No, Warrior Dash is certainly not worried about their survival, but they are testing out a new race distance. Warrior Dash is adding Iron Warrior Dash option to their races in Georgia, Texas and Michigan. The iron distance is about 15 miles with twice as many obstacles as a Warrior Dash.  This 2013 development will give racers looking for a serious challenge another option.  While there are abundant 5k races all over the place, if your options for races over 10 miles were limited to Tough Mudder and a handful of Spartan Beasts.

The Zombie Run:

This one isn’t actually an obstacle course, but it will appeal to many obstacle course aficionados.  A new zombie run is launching this year complete with fake blood and zombies, and I imagine that Run For Your Lives is none too happy about it.  In fact I noticed that RFYL recently added the “The ORIGINAL Zombie Run” to their website.  The first Zombie Run will launch in Philadelphia on April 7th and they have scheduled 8 other events around the states.  The Zombie Run uses the same idea as RFYL: runners try to escape with their lives from zombies.  And yes you can pay $25 to be a zombie in this one as well.

Project Mud is another 5k Mud-Focused run. They are ready to show you a good time at 6 different events:Virginia Beach, Charleston, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Nashville.

Check out the Mud Run Calendar to see if these races will be near you!

I’ll certainly be interested to hear what readers think of these races.  Are you signed up for any of them?  How do they rank?
