Pull-Up Bar

Mud Run Pull Up BarPull-ups are probably the most effective upper body exercise you can do in preparation for an obstacle course race, but not everyone has easy access to a bar.  Obstacles like monkey bars, walls and rope climbs tend to be a big stumbling block for a lot of people in mud runs because they haven’t developed enough strength in their backs, shoulders and arms.

The Deluxe CXP Chin Up Bar  offers a very convenient and affordable way to develop the muscles you need to pull your body weight up any obstacle you encounter.  It rests on a door frame and doesn’t require any drilling.  It has 12 different grips to help you hit muscles at different angles.  Even if you can’t yet do a complete pull-up, there are plenty of ways to use the pull-up bar to build up to one.

Training Watches:

UnknownFor a lot of people, the most difficult part of a mud run isn’t so much a particular obstacle, but the distance and the elevation change the course covers.  When race directors have hills and mountains at their venue, it’s a pretty safe bet that you’ll be heading up and down them.  A 5k run that changes 1000 feet in elevation is significantly harder than a flat 5k.

In order to be adequately prepared for a race, it is important to be intentional about hitting your mileage goals and making sure that you include significant elevation change in your training.

The Garmin Forerunner 410 GPS-Enabled Sports Watch with Heart Rate Monitor is an ideal training partner because it can measure the distance, speed and the elevation change of your workout, so you know exactly whether you are meeting your training goals.  You can also download all of the data once you get home, which provides an easy way to track your progress and a little extra motivation.

If you only want to track distance, speed and heart rate (and you don’t mind not being able to download data onto another device), then the Timex Marathon GPS Watch is a more affordable option that can help you make sure that you hit your distance and speed goals.
